Description: The Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia (Vancouver Campus), invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Modern Persian Literature and Culture. 
 

Requirements include: a Ph.D. in modern Persian Literature or a closely related subject (or the expectation of having successfully defended the dissertation before July 1, 2022); evidence of excellence or strong potential in research and undergraduate and graduate teaching; organizational and leadership skills; a strong track record of participation in team work and program affairs; and experience in community outreach and program building. Preference will be given to applicants with the ability to teach courses in English about modern Persian Literature in English Translation, History of Modern Persian Literature, Modern Persian Society and Culture through Literature and Film, and/or Iranian Cinema. Applicants are expected to have native or near native proficiency in Persian, and the successful candidate will be expected to work closely with tenure‐stream Asian Studies faculty in South Asian and Persianate and Islamic history and culture, and with any future hires in the area of Persian/Iranian Studies. The University of Chicago: Humanities Division: Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations

Description: The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and the College of the University of Chicago invite applications for appointment to a one-year open-rank position as Instructional Professor in modern Persian. Start date of the appointment will be September 1, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. Appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Instructional Professor, Associate Instructional Professor, or Instructional Professor, depending on qualifications and educational background. This is a non-renewable, one-year appointment to fill an immediate curricular need.

Responsibilities include both teaching and service duties. Teaching consists of six courses in Persian language across three quarters, both elementary and intermediate, as well as a seventh topical Advanced Persian course (Persian of the Media, Persian Literature, Iranian History, etc.). Service duties may include assistance with student placement, programmatic assessment, coordination of the Persian Language Circle, Conversation Table, or other program-specific duties. Instructional Professors of all ranks are required to engage in regular professional development.

Qualifications: Applicants should demonstrate previous language teaching experience at the college or post-secondary level. An M.A. degree or equivalent is required. Candidates with specialized training in second language acquisition, second language pedagogy, and/or assessment are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient language proficiency for teaching Persian in a university context, e.g. through an ACTFL-certified result at the Superior level or higher, or through receipt of an advanced degree earned in a Persian-language context.

Arizona State University Summer Intensive Persian 

Arizona State University seeks a faculty associate to teach elementary or intermediate intensive Persian in its 2020 summer Critical Languages Institute. Candidates must have a Master’s degree or higher in philology, linguistics, language teaching or a closely related field by the time of appointment; possess native proficiency in Persian; and have at least one year’s experience teaching Persian at the university level to non-native speakers. Strong preference will go to candidates who have successfully taught in intensive language programs, to candidates with experience teaching independently, and to candidates with high levels of proficiency in English. The successful candidates will teach Persian 4 hours a day, five days a week, for eight weeks and will contribute to cultural programming.

Compensation for the 7-week 2020 program consists of a salary of $8960, housing in Tempe (a taxable benefit), and reimbursement for air/ground travel of up to $500.

Roshan Institute for Persian Studies at the University of Maryland seeks a full-time lecturer for Persian Studies

Roshan Institute for Persian Studies in the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Maryland seeks applications for a position as a full-time lecturer, professional track, beginning Fall 2020. Candidates should have a track record in teaching Persian language as well as the ability to offer undergraduate courses taught in English in one or more of the following areas: Iranian art, society and culture, and social media. Through teaching both upper- and lower-division language and culture courses, the Roshan Lecturer will play a key role in attracting talented undergraduates to UMD’s Persian program and familiarizing them with contemporary Iran. Applicants must have a commitment to excellence in teaching; native or near-native fluency in Persian and English; and a Ph.D. in hand by August 2020. Experience with fundraising is a plus.

APTLI Language Instructor, University of Wisconsin-Madison

 

The Arabic, Persian, and Turkish Language Institute (APTLI) is an eight-week intensive language institute that offers courses in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish languages annually from mid-June through mid-August. The 2020 APTLI program will be held from June 15 through August 7 and will be preceded by a staff orientation week from June 8-12, 2020. 


Language instructors will be responsible for participating in the APTLI staff orientation week activities as well as instructor meetings throughout the eight-week program. Under the supervision of the director of the Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institutes (WISLI), instructors will prepare appropriate materials and deliver instruction in their assigned classes, hold office hours, and participate in teacher meetings. TENURE-TRACK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITION IN IRANIAN LITERATURE, CINEMA, AND CULTURE IN THE DEPARTMENT OF MIDDLE EASTERN & SOUTH ASIAN LANGUAGES & CULTURES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The Department of Middle Eastern & South Asian Languages & Cultures at the University of Virginia invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Iranian Literature, Cinema, and Culture with an expected start date of August 2020.

The successful candidate will join a community comprising faculty teaching and doing research on Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Persian, Urdu, and Sanskrit from linguistic, literary, cultural studies, historical, and social scientific perspectives. The teaching load is four courses per year (a 2-2 load). Candidates should be prepared to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in classical and modern Persian literature, as well as introductory courses on Iranian cinema or culture.

Applicants must have: an active program of research in Persian Literature, Cinema, or related field; a commitment to excellence in teaching; native or near-native fluency in Persian and English; and a Ph.D. in hand by August 2020.

TENURE-TRACK INSTRUCTOR POSITION IN PERSIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE AT UBC


The Department of Asian Studies, at The University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus seeks to make a full-time appointment in the field of Persian Language and Culture at the rank of Instructor, tenure-track, with responsibility for teaching courses and developing curriculum in Persian language and culture.

Requirements include: advanced proficiency in Persian; a Ph.D. in Persian Language and Linguistics, Persian Applied Linguistics, Persian language pedagogy, or a closely related field; exceptional organizational and leadership skills; evidence of substantial experience and excellent teaching ability in Persian for both heritage and non-heritage learners at the post-secondary level in North America; experience preparing teaching materials independently or collaboratively; and a strong track record of full participation in team work and program affairs. Individuals with experience in community outreach, program coordination and design, and teaching innovative Content-Based Instruction (CBI) curriculum for advanced learners of Persian are particularly encouraged to apply. We seek an exceptional teacher with a track record of employing innovative pedagogies, such as community-based learning, flexible and/or online learning. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an excellent record of teaching, service, and educational leadership.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or expect to have successfully defended) prior to the starting date. The normal teaching load of an Instructor is six 3-credit courses over the academic year. Courses will range from first- to third-year undergraduate courses and the bulk of the annual teaching load will be courses in Persian Language for both heritage and non-heritage learners, with occasional content courses taught in English. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with tenure-stream Asian Studies faculty in South Asian and Persianate and Islamic history and culture, and with any future hires in the area of Persian/Iranian Studies.

As this is a tenure-track position in the Educational Leadership stream, the successful candidate will be reviewed for reappointment, tenure, and promotion in subsequent years, in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
